HC Deb 11 November 1998 vol 319 c213W
Mr. David Stewart

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if the process by which the Government will draw up their advice to Her Majesty the Queen for the awarding of city status will be the same in Scotland as in the rest of the United Kingdom; [58734]

(2) what arrangements his Department proposes to make in order to select candidates to propose for city status to mark the millennium celebration and the Queen's Golden Jubilee. [58690]

Mr. Dewar

Awards of city status in any part of the UK will be made by Her Majesty The Queen acting under the Royal Prerogative, on the advice of the Government of the day. I shall make an announcement in due course that will explain the procedure to be followed by Scottish towns wishing to be considered for a grant of city status.
