To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many cases of breast cancer have been diagnosed in women aged 65 years and over in the last year; and how many resulting fatalities there have been in women aged 65 years and over in each of the last five years. [59146]

Letter from Tim Holt to Ms Linda Perham, dated 11 November 1998: As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your recent question on the cases of breast cancer in women over 65 years. Provisional figures show that there were 12,708 newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer in women aged 65 years and over in England and Wales in 1994 (the most recent year for which data are available); the numbers of deaths in 1993–1997 are given in the table below.
