HC Deb 10 November 1998 vol 319 c145W
Mr. Mitchell

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the policy of the fisheries regulating authority of the Commission of the European Community in respect of(a) off-quota catches by line fishermen in the territorial waters of the United Kingdom and (b) fisheries within territorial limits of a member state shown to be self sustainable. [57483]

Mr. Morley

All landings of fish of stocks subject to quotas count against Member States' quotas whether or not the fish are caught within territorial waters and regardless of the means used to catch the fish. Such restrictions do not apply to stocks of fish and shellfish for which quotas are not set.

Member States are able to apply additional national conservation rules to their own fisherman. Many such rules are applied by Sea Fisheries Committees within the 6 mile limits around the coasts of England and Wales.
