HC Deb 10 November 1998 vol 319 cc148-9W
Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of abortions in Clwyd, South were funded by the NHS in the last year for which figures are available. [58719]

Ms Hewitt

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the Director of the Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to reply.

Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. Martyn Jones, dated 10 November 1998: As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your parliamentary question on abortions. Information on the number of abortions performed on residents of each parliamentary constituency is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. ONS routinely publishes abortion statistics by regions and health authorities (HA). In 1997, the latest year for which provisional figures are available, 86 per cent. of abortions performed on residents of North Wales HA were funded by the NHS.
