Mr. Beith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the courts which have sentenced a young person to a period of detention in a secure training unit since April. [58466]

Mr. Boateng

As of 6 November, there have been 85 secure training orders made since the sentence came into effect on 1 March. The following Youth Courts have made one or more orders:

Nottingham Teesside Kings Lynn
Scarborough Trafford Maidstone
Sheffield Slough
Sunderland Thames
Thanet
Tunbridge Wells
Waltham Forest
West Kent
Whitham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many young persons have been sentenced to a period of detention in a secure training unit since April; and if he will make a statement; [58463]

(2) how many persons had been sentenced to a period of detention in a secure training unit but were waiting for a place at the latest available date. [58464]

Mr. Boateng

As of 6 November, 85 young people had been sentenced to a secure training order. There are currently 7 trainees in local authority secure accommodation for whom no places are available for them at present.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the range of offences committed by young persons sentenced to a period of detention in a secure training unit since April. [58465]

The following range of offences have been committed by young people sentenced to a secure training order:

  • Affray
  • Arson
  • Aggravated vehicle taking
  • Attempted theft of motor vehicle
  • Burglary
  • Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal
  • Common assault
  • Criminal damage
  • Dangerous driving
  • Driving while disqualified
  • Indecent assault
  • No driving licence
  • Obtaining property by deception
  • Possession of a knife
  • Possession of drugs
  • Taking without the owner's consent
  • Theft
  • Violent disorder.
