HC Deb 09 November 1998 vol 319 cc53-4W
Mr. David Atkinson

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement on Pledge 2000. [58320]

Mrs. Roche

Pledge 2000 was launched by Action 2000 on 29 July 1998 in response to industry demand for an approach companies could use to deal with the Millennium Bug. It is a public scheme designed to indicate statement of intent to work co-operatively with customers and suppliers to disclose, discuss and solve issues of mutual interest arising from the date change problem. Although not legally binding, Pledge 2000 reduces the fear of litigation and enables work to continue towards ensuring business continuity up and down the numerous supply chains that underpin the UK economy.

The pledge is in the form of a six point manifesto encouraging companies to share information, help other firms in their supply chains and avoid resorting to legal action wherever possible. Signing Pledge 2000 represents a commitment at the highest level and is signed by a Board level person who is responsible for communicating the company's pledge internally. Action 2000 will continue to encourage businesses to use this valuable tool to resolve their Millennium Bug issues.
