HC Deb 09 November 1998 vol 319 cc62-5W
22. Ms Buck

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in what ways the national lottery will benefit millennium award-winners in London. [57265]

Mr. Chris Smith

The Millennium Awards scheme is funded by the National Lottery through the Millennium Commission. To date 244 individuals in London have been awarded a total of £750,000 towards schemes to: popularise science; attend Summer University; improve the environment; and promote understanding of mental illness.

It is expected that some 40,000 individuals around the country will receive Millennium Awards.

26. Mr. Bill O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what action his Department is taking to ensure(a) communities and (b) individuals are made aware of the availability of lottery funds for communities eligible for small grants; and if he will make a statement. [57269]

Mr. Banks

We are working with the Lottery distributors on a new leaflet to highlight the availability of Lottery funding. It will publicise the one-stop shop scheme for small community grants which distributors in England are planning to introduce in the East Midlands on 18 November and extend to the rest of England next spring. The scheme will also be publicised at a conference which the Department is running in Barnsley on 10 November to explore how Lottery funding can help to regenerate coalfield communities.

Mr. Donohoe

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport if he will provide a breakdown, by local authority area in Scotland, of the grants awarded for each National Lottery good cause. [58294]

Mr. Banks

To date 4,710 awards worth a total of £497,705,355 have been made in Scotland. A breakdown by Scottish local authorities for each good cause is in the following table.

Awards information is also available on the Lottery website at www.lottery.culture.gov.uk.

Mr. Spring

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what consultations he undertook with National Lottery distribution bodies prior to his announcement that the Millennium share would be moved into the New Opportunities Fund. [58484]

Mr. Chris Smith

We are regularly in touch with all the National Lottery distribution bodies and are conscious of the demands they are seeking to meet. We are also conscious of the potential for New Opportunities Fund (NOF) has to meet pressing needs in the fields of health, education and the environment. That is why, as well as announcing that NOF will inherit the Millennium stream, we also announced that each of the arts, sport, heritage and charities can plan on an extra £50 million from the Lottery between now and 2001 and that they are each guaranteed 16 per cent. of Lottery revenues from October 2001 onwards.
