HC Deb 09 November 1998 vol 319 c17W
Mr. John Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what proportion of respondents to the consultation exercise on the proposed Greater London Authority supported the additional member system of electing the authority. [58482]

Mr. Raynsford

Our proposals to elect the Assembly by AMS were set out in the White Paper "A Mayor and Assembly for London" (Cm 3897). These proposals were endorsed by 72 per cent. of those who voted in the referendum on 7 May 1998.

We received a total of 1,289 responses to the consultation exercise on the Green Paper "New Leadership for London" (Cm 3724). Of these, 103 respondents favoured a system of proportional representation to elect the Assembly, as opposed to 33 who supported first past the post. Nine respondents specifically supported the additional member system (AMS).
