HC Deb 05 November 1998 vol 318 cc633-4W
Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what additional funds he has made available to health boards, the Common Services Agency, the State Hospital and the Scottish Council for Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education for(a) 1999–2000, (b) 2000–01 and (c) 2001–02. [58946]

Mr. Galbraith

My right hon. Friend has today announced how the extra £1.8 billion flowing from the Comprehensive Spending Review will be allocated to the National Health Service in Scotland for the next 3 years. The extra allocations are £280m revenue and £20m capital, £547m and £43m, £852m and £58m for 1999–2000, 2000–01 and 2001–02 respectively.

For 1999–2000 £60m of the £280m revenue is being earmarked along with £80m of existing recurring funds for a new long term Modernisation Programme. This Programme is designed to improve the services provided for patients and ensure the National Health Service in Scotland is prepared for the 21st century.

In the Modernisation Programme £43m will be directed centrally for planned strategic developments in, for example, areas of information technology, education and training, and to implement proposals arising from the Acute Services Review and the forthcoming Public Health White Paper. The balance of the Modernisation Programme funds (£97m) will be distributed with Health Board allocations, again for implementing national strategic developments such as improving care in the community, reducing waiting times and waiting lists and investing in information technology.

Details of the Health Board allocations for 1999–2000 and the indicative allocations for the Common Services Agency, the State Hospital and Scottish Council for Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education are shown in the table.
