HC Deb 05 November 1998 vol 318 c627W
Mr. McWalter

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what quantitative assessment of the benefits which accrue from the investments in the development of the individual's imaginative and creative capacity the Government and Governmental agencies currently make. [57766]

Janet Anderson

The creativity and imagination of the British people are among our greatest strengths, shaping our culture and our position in the world. We will tomorrow be publishing an analysis of the economic benefits of our creative industries. These sectors, which we define as those which have their origin in the talent, skill and imagination of an individual and rely on the generation and exploitation of intellectual property for job and wealth creation, turn over nearly £60 billion a year and employ l½ million people. They also constitute the fastest growing section of the national economy, earning us £8 billion in exports.
