Information on the ethnic origin of civil servants is collected using a voluntary, confidential questionnaire. The number and percentage of civil servants from ethnic minorities who have submitted a questionnaire, by grade equivalents, for each Department, are set out in the tables. Civil Service employment statistics are centrally collected and updated annually, as at 1 April. Data for 1998 are still being collated, therefore the figures quoted in this answer are as at 1 April 1997.
