HC Deb 04 November 1998 vol 318 c582W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development if she will make a statement on the humanitarian situation in Sudan. [58158]

Clare Short

The humanitarian situation remains acute. In Bahr el Ghazal mortality rates have fallen but in some parts of the region they remain unacceptably high. The World Food Programme has sufficient resources to meet all food aid needs in Sudan until April 1999. We continue to press for an extension to the cease-fire beyond Bahr el Ghazal because insecurity hampers access in many areas both to assess needs and to deliver supplies.

Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development if she will discuss with her American counterparts the provision of(a) anti-TB drugs and (b) chloroquinine and other anti-malarial drugs to the Sudan in quantities which would have been produced by the El Shifa factory, prior to its destruction.
