HC Deb 04 November 1998 vol 318 cc570-1W
Dr. Whitehead

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what plans he has to review the regulations requiring local authorities to ensure that vehicles licensed for private hire are distinguished in their markings from those licensed as Hackney carriages. [57603]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The Government have no plans to carry out such a review. The legislation already prohibits the use of signs on private hire vehicles which might suggest that they are hackney carriages. Otherwise, it allows local licensing authorities discretion in deciding which marking to permit, or require, on private hire vehicles and hackney carriages.
