HC Deb 04 November 1998 vol 318 c583W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what money her Department has given to HIV-AIDS vaccine development initiatives since May 1997. [58188]

Clare Short

The UK is the first government to make a contribution—£200,000—to the International Aids Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), to assist in the development of a safe, effective and inexpensive vaccine to prevent HIV infection. In addition, £300,000 of the Department for International Development's overall grant to the Medical Research Council for 1997–98 went to support research into an HIV vaccine, topical virucides and microbicides. A further £300,000 is committed for 1998–99.
