HC Deb 04 November 1998 vol 318 cc585-6W
Ms Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement in respect of the ICNIRP international guidelines and their relevance in determining safe exposure to the non-thermal effects of electromagnetic fields. [57339]

Ms Jowell

I have been asked to reply.

I am advised that the guidelines for limiting exposure to electromagnetic fields recently produced by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) were developed after a comprehensive review of published scientific papers. The proposed exposure restrictions are based solely on established effects. ICNIRP concluded that the available data on the non-thermal and potential long term effects of exposure, such as an increase risk of cancer, are insufficient to provide a basis for exposure restrictions.
