HC Deb 02 November 1998 vol 318 cc375-6W
Mr. Gerrard

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what policies the Prison Service has adopted with regard to the provision of facilities to assist disabled people to visit prisoners. [57335]

Mr. George Howarth

The provision of facilities for visitors is the responsibility of each establishment. The Prison Service has advised governors that, in considering the facilities which should be made available locally, the conditions in which visits take place, and the treatment of visitors, are no less important than the number and length of visits. The specific facilities which are available to assist disabled people to visit prisoners throughout England and Wales are being reviewed as part of the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, in accordance with the Government's implementation timetable.
