To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) how many community hospitals there are in Great Britain; and how many are under review; [57497]

(2) how many community hospitals there were in Great Britain on 1 May 1997. [57498]

The information requested for England is not collected centrally.

Questions regarding Scotland and Wales are matters for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of States for Scotland and for Wales.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) how many community hospitals will close by 1 January 2000; [57494]

(2) how many community hospitals he estimates there will be in Great Britain on 1 January 2000. [57496]

We are committed to modernising the National Health Service and community hospitals can have an important role in this NHS.

It is not possible to predict what future requirements for community hospitals will be. These will be considered on a case by case basis.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what has been the average bed occupancy in community hospitals in(a) England and (b) Oxfordshire in the last 18 months. [57495]

Information about bed occupancy is available only by trust or type of trust, not by hospital or type of hospital.
