HC Deb 21 May 1998 vol 312 c474W
Mr. Wallace

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list(a) the average number of school children in Wales travelling by school transport each day and (b) the number of (i) fatalities and (ii) injuries of school children involved in road accidents associated with school transport in each of the last five years. [42422]

Mr. Hain

The average number of children (aged four to 16) resident in Great Britain in 1992–96 who travelled to school by bus each day was about 1.7 million. Of these, about 0.5 million used a school bus. This centrally available information is from the national travel survey. Reliable estimates are not available separately for Wales.

Details of reported accidents to 4 to 16 year olds in Wales on their way to or from school as passengers on buses, coaches or minibuses for the period requested are set out in the following table.
