In the absence of the Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your recent question on deaths which have occurred as a result of blood transfusions and faulty blood products.The table below shows the numbers of deaths registered in England and Wales with either (a) an underlying cause of blood transfusion or contaminated blood products or (b) where blood transfusion or contaminated blood products were mentioned on the death certificate as contributing to the death.
