Mr. Randall

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department how much his Department spent in 1997–98 and plans to spend in 1998–99 on computer technology in(a) the magistrates courts, (b) the county courts, (c) the Crown courts and (d) the High Court and Court of Appeal. [41285]

Mr. Hoon

During 1997–98, the Department's spending on computer technology was:

  1. (a) £7.8 million for the magistrates' courts1;
  2. (b) £7.0 million for the county courts;
  3. (c) £1.5 million for the Crown Court; and,
  4. (d) £1.5 million for the High Court and Court of Appeal.

The estimates for 1998–99 are:

  1. (a) £11.5 million for the magistrates' courts;
  2. (b) £7.7 million for the county courts;
  3. (c) £1.2 million for the Crown Court; and,
  4. (d) £1.0 million for the High Court and Court of Appeal.

1This figure is an estimate because the actual expenditure will not be known until after December 1998 when we have received the audited grant forms from the external auditors.
