Further to the Written Answer by the Lord Williams of Mostyn on 6 May (WA 73), in which years this century the number of women in prison in England and Wales exceeded:

  1. (a) the figure for 24 April 1998 of 3,086; and
  2. (b) the projected figure for 2005 of 5,200. [HL1828]

The average female prison population exceeded 3,086 in the years 1901–1905 inclusive. The female prison population has never exceeded the projected figure for 2005 of 5,200.
