§ Dr. StrangThe Government attach the highest priority to safety on our railways. Railways are one of the safest forms of transport but there is room for improvement. Following the report of the Transport Sub-Committee the HSC has agreed to my request and brought forward its planned review of railtrack's role in rail safety.
§ Mr. Eric ClarkeTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will make a statement on the representations made to him by the train drivers union expressing concern that criminal proceedings are delaying and could pre-empt, public inquiries into rail safety. [39980]
§ Ms Glenda JacksonWe are not aware of any representations being made direct to Ministers by the train drivers union, expressing concern that criminal proceedings are delaying and could pre-empt public inquiries into rail safety. However, a statement to this effect was made at the Health and Safety Commission's Railway Industry Advisory Committee, Chaired by HM Chief Inspector of Railways, on 20 February 1998.
