HC Deb 31 March 1998 vol 309 cc507-8W
Mr. Hancock

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what assessment he has made of the US Government's public health policy regarding the daily usage of vitamin B6. [36457]

Mr. Rooker

The basis of the US Government's estimate of the vitamin B6 requirement of healthy adults is 16 micrograms per gram of protein per day. This is virtually identical to the 15 micrograms per gram of protein per day that is the basis of the estimate for healthy adults in the UK. We are not aware of any US Government public health policy on the desirability of intakes above this level.

There are no specific statutory limits in the US on the level of vitamin B6 in dietary supplements sold under food law. However, US legislation appears to allow less scope for the introduction of such limits on a precautionary basis. In this respect, it would seem to afford less protection to consumers than UK legislation.
