§ Ms Jowell[holding answer 19 March 1998]: There are 744 places on the Department's non-departmental public bodies of which 36 are currently unfilled. 11 members have resigned since 1 May 1997; 23 members have retired; the appointments of 43 members have expired and not been renewed; 603 members have remained in place; and 73 have been appointed.
