To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many pensioners in the UK have annual incomes in excess of(a) £25,000, (b) £30,000 and (c) £40,000. [36512]

Notes:

1. This estimate has been provided by Inland Revenue, based on the 1995/96 Survey of Personal Incomes projected forward to 1997/98 levels of earnings and prices.

2. Annual total income is defined as the sum of all income sources that are subject to tax. It excludes certain incomes that are paid gross such as some National Savings products.

3. Figures rounded to the nearest hundred.
