HC Deb 27 March 1998 vol 309 c308W
Mr. Gill

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in which year each member state of the EU banned the feeding of animal protein to(a) ruminants and (b) other meat animals. [36690]

Mr. Rooker

An EU-wide ban of the feeding of mammalian protein to ruminants was introduced by Commission Decision 94/381/EC on 27 June 1994. Some Member States introduced national provisions before the Commission Decision came into force. Those which we know about are as follows:

Figures for usage by the Northern Ireland compound feed industry are available only from 1993 onwards and are as follows:

Year Thousand tonnes
1993 23
1994 24
1995 26

These figures do not take account of any meat and bone meal which may be used directly by farmers for animal feed.
