HC Deb 26 March 1998 vol 309 c237W
Mr. Swinney

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the location of BBC World Service buildings in the United Kingdom, providing a breakdown of(a) staff numbers, (b) salary costs and (c) running costs for buildings in (i) London and (ii) Scotland. [36192]

Mr. Fatchett

The BBC World Service directly employs 1,057 equivalent full-time staff with an average basic salary of £25,117.

The World Service does not itself own any premises; all buildings are owned or leased by the BBC as a whole, and the World Service pays a central accommodation charge for the use of these buildings, which are all located in London. At present "running costs" are:

Location Running costs (£)
Bush House (World Service share only) 5,008,000
Beaumont House 112,000
Macklin Street Nursery 65,000
