HC Deb 25 March 1998 vol 309 c171W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what safety procedures are enforced during railway line maintenance in Wales; and what measures are taken to ensure compliance with these procedures. [35536]

Mr. Hain

All those involved in maintenance of the railway throughout Great Britain must comply with their obligations under the Health and Safety at Work, etc. Act 1974 and related legislation. Work on Railtrack's network must comply with the requirements of their Rule Book and the Railway Standards (the provisions of which are mandatory on Railtrack plc and its contractors by virtue of Railtrack's Railway Safety case and related contractual arrangements).

Inspectors of the HSE's Railway Inspectorate are responsible for enforcing legal requirements relating to health and safety on the railways.
