To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications for British citizenship by(a) naturalisation on the grounds of residence, (b) naturalisation on the grounds of marriage, (c) registration as an adult and (d) registration as a child were made in (i) 1994, (ii) 1995, (iii) 1996, (iv) 1997 and (v) 1998 to the latest convenient date; and what was the average length of time taken to deal with each application in each of the years listed. The number of applications received in each category in the years 1994 to 24 February 1998 are as follows. We do not record the average time taken to deal with each application within a calendar year. The figures in brackets show the average number of months taken to consider applications as at 31 December each year with the exception of 1998 when the position at the end of February is shown.
