§ Ms Glenda Jackson[holding answer 16 March 1998]: The death rate for children aged 0–15 has gone down by 66 per cent. between 1981–1985 and 1996. Over the same period the volume of traffic on the road has increased by 38 per cent. Although children are now walking less, there appears to have been an overall reduction in the rate of child pedestrian accidents in that period.
