To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) if he will place in the Library a copy of the external legal advice, based on two opinions by Patrick Elias QC, on the subject of the Jepson case and proposals to amend sex discrimination legislation; [34878]

(2) what external legal advice he has sought from persons with relevant expertise in Scotland on sex discrimination in relation to the Scotland Bill; and if he will list the persons consulted and make a statement on the advice received. [34880]

[holding answer 17 March 1998]: The Government do not ordinarily disclose the terms of legal advice and do not consider that it is appropriate to disclose any specific legal advice received in relation to the matters referred to in the question.
