To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to his oral answers of 2 February 1998,Official Report, columns 703–04, on immigration advisers, how his Department assesses the quality of representation in immigration and asylum cases provided by those organisations funded under section 23 of the 1991 Immigration Act. The work of the Refugee Legal Centre and Immigration Advisory Service, the two organisations funded under section 23 of the Immigration Act 1971, is regulated through the framework laid down in the respective Conditions of Grant-in-Aid, under which they are required to agree performance targets and measures with the Home Office and to provide regular reports on the levels of performance achieved.
