HC Deb 16 March 1998 vol 308 c476W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what practice is adopted in British embassies for the monitoring of human rights matters. [34308]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

As part of my right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary's commitment to put human rights at the centre of foreign policy, Foreign Office departments have now begun to formulate country human rights strategies to focus policies and project work in respect of countries where human rights concerns exist. The on-going monitoring by posts and departments of respect for human rights, through contacts with both government and civil society, will contribute to this process.

The first annual human rights report will provide an additional opportunity for the public to comment on the government's human rights activities and to assist us in identifying the way forward.
