§ Angela EagleThe table shows the total reported tonnage of paper and card, glass and metal cans/scrap metal which was collected for recycling by local authorities in England and Wales during the financial year 1995/96. The data are based on information provided by local authorities representing 95 per cent. of the households in England and Wales.
It is not possible to provide the proportions as requested as there is insufficient national data on waste composition to express the tonnage of each material collected for recycling as a proportion of the total of each material in the domestic waste stream.
Figures for 1996/97 are being processed and will be published as soon as they are available. No estimates are made for future years.
