§ Dr. ReidAs at 31 December 1997, the most recent date for which verified figures are available, the number of surplus non-industrial civilian staff retained on the payroll in each Top Level Budget area were as follows:

The number of staff who are temporarily surplus varies from month to month, as some are found permanent posts and others are declared newly surplus. Accordingly, it is not possible to estimate the annual cost of those staff who may be temporarily surplus.
