HC Deb 16 March 1998 vol 308 cc495-6W
Mr. Keith Simpson

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what representations she has received concerning the impact of EU regulations on the London art market; and if she will make a statement. [32916]

Mr. Ian McCartney

I have received representations from the British Art Market Federation and from members of the art trade, and am aware of concerns about the effects of EU legislation on the London art market, in particular the Commission's proposal for an artist's re-sale rights directive, and the operation of import VAT.

The art trade makes a significant contribution to the United Kingdom economy. It is a highly successful industry. The Government are determined to see that its achievements are not undermined. Ministers have met art trade representatives on several occasions. We understand their concerns, and maintain a regular dialogue with them.
