HC Deb 12 March 1998 vol 308 c315W
Mr. Hoyle

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people are employed(a) directly and (b) indirectly in the United Kingdom brewing industry. [33913]

Mrs. Liddell

The information requested falls within the responsibility of the Chief Executive of the Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. Lindsay Hoyle, dated 12 March 1998: As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your parliamentary question on employment in the brewing industry. Information from the Annual Employment Survey (AES) shows that at September 1996 there were 24,000 employees in the manufacture of cider and other fruit wines, beer and malt, and 410,000 employees in bars and the retail sale of alcoholic and other beverages. This information is for Great Britain and not the United Kingdom as Northern Ireland estimates are not available at this level of detail.
