§ Mr. Nigel Griffiths[holding answer 2 March 1998]: The Director General of Fair Trading met with representatives of petrol wholesalers and retailers in October last year in an attempt to facilitate better relations between them. However, the Director General has no powers under the competition legislation to impose a code of practice on the petrol industry, nor is he involved in the negotiation of a code; this is for industry to devise.
