HC Deb 06 March 1998 vol 307 c778W
Dr. Kumar

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the money allocated for tourism per head in Scotland for the years 1995 to 1998. [32261]

Mr. Wilson

The Grant-in-Aid allocated to the Scottish Tourist Board expressed per head of population in Scotland is as follows:

Year £
1995–96 3.43
1996–97 3.54
1997–98 3.79
1998–99 3.79

These figures exclude the residual impact of Section 4 grants, to support tourism business development. The Section 4 scheme in Scotland was suspended in 1993.

The tourism industry in Scotland also benefits from the support and activities of other public agencies, including Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (which provide support for business development), the British Tourist Authority, Scottish Natural Heritage, Historic Scotland and local authorities. It is not possible to quantify the total spend directly attributable to activities in support of tourism in Scotland.
