To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 23 February 1998,Official Report, column 41, in what circumstances he permits the use of rifles at night as a means of vermin control in areas of the Defence Estate that are being used for military training at that time; and how many (a) accidents and (b) other incidents arising from such activity have been notified to his Department in the last three years. The use of rifles at night for vermin control when military training is taking place has not been permitted. Accordingly, there have been no reported accidents or incidents.
