Mr. Nicholas Winterton

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people are currently employed by(a) the Bank of England and (b) each of the central banks of each EU member state; what estimate he has made of the number to be employed by the proposed European central bank; at what location; and if he will make a statement. The Bank of England currently employs 3,056 full-time and 227 part-time staff. The total number of staff employed by each of the central banks of the EU member states, according to the "Morgan Stanley Central Bank Directory 1998", are displayed in the table.
