Mr. Maples

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what assessment his Department has made of the(a) capital and (b) revenue costs of (i) keeping Bart's Hospital open, as proposed by the Turnberg Committee and (ii) concentrating all services on the Royal London site in a new hospital; [30995]

(2) what assessment he has made of the estimate made by the Royal Hospitals NHS Trust of the additional annual cost of keeping Bart's Hospital open as a cancer and cardiac centre compared with concentrating all services in a new hospital on the Royal London site; and if he will compensate the trust or health authority for those additional costs. It is not expected that the gross capital costs will be radically different from the previous plans, although the proceeds from the sale of the Smithfield site

will no longer be available. The detailed capital and revenue costs and the financial implications will be closely scrutinised through the normal rigorous planning and approval process. The question of any additional resources for the Royal Hospitals Trust and the east end as a whole will need to be addressed as part of this planning process as well as in the context of the Government's review of the arrangements for the distribution of resources in both primary and secondary care.
