§ Clare ShortHealth and population is a major priority for the Department for International Development (DFID) programme in India. In the current financial year we are spending about £20 million on projects to help improve the effectiveness of Indian health services; to control tuberculosis, HIV and malaria; to improve access to reproductive health care; and to eradicate polio. We are also supporting smaller scale projects through NGOs. In addition, we make a substantial contribution in this field through the European Union and multilateral agencies such as the World Bank.
