HC Deb 02 March 1998 vol 307 cc500-1W
Mr. Beggs

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what quantity of beef has been imported to Northern Ireland since the beef export ban; and from which countries. [30682]

Mr. Paul Murphy

I have been asked to reply.

With the introduction of the single market and the abolition of border controls on goods moving between Member States, figures on imports of beef from other Member States are not recorded. The only information available relates to imports landed directly into Northern Ireland from outside the EU. Details since the imposition of the beef export ban are as follows:

  • Uruguay: 45,096 kgs
  • Brazil: 17,013 kgs
  • New Zealand (veal): 30 kgs.

Mr. Beggs

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if beef has been imported into Northern Ireland from non-EU countries since the imposition of the beef export ban on the United Kingdom. [30683]

Mr. Paul Murphy

I have been asked to reply.

Yes.
