HC Deb 19 June 1998 vol 314 c346W
Dr. Gibson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many professors in medical schools are female. [45804]

Dr. Howells

In the 1996–97 academic year, the latest year for which figures are available, there were 44 professors of medicine who were female, in higher education establishments in the UK. This represents 6 per cent. of all professors in medicine.

This figure covers those employed within the professor grade in institutions. There may be others who carry the title of professor but are employed in other grade structures and so are not included in this figure.
