HC Deb 17 June 1998 vol 314 c260W
Mr. Wallace

To ask the Secretary of State for Health in respect of how many cases of hip joint replacement operations conducted in England and Wales since 1980, patients have been readmitted to hospital for further hip replacement surgery within(a) five years and (b) 10 years of the original operation. [45776]

Mr. Milburn

There are currently no mechanisms within the data collection systems in England which allow hospital operations to be linked to individual patients. We are, however, discussing with the professions how we might get better information on the outcome of primary hip replacement operations. The table shows the number of primary and revision hip replacement operations carried out in England since 1990–91.

Information about hip operations in Wales is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
