Dr. John Cunningham[holding answer 15 June 1998]: Legislation at EU and UK levels exists to ensure that food products entering the UK meet acceptable standards of safety. Developments in other countries are kept under general review and the Government are committed to improving standards of food safety and farm animal welfare at home and throughout Europe.
