§ Mr. MacleanTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Motherwell and Wishaw (Mr. Roy) of 2 June 1998,Official Report, column 196, what was the basis of his calculation that a prisoner paying £1 per week covered the costs of an in-cell television set. [45721]
§ Mr. McLeishThe sum of around £1.00 per week was arrived at by dividing the likely cost of installing a television in a prisoner's cell by the period of 3 years over which that cost is to be recovered. The cost of installing a television, including purchase, warranty, electrical health and safety checking, and installation, is estimated to be around £150.00. Over 3 years, this gives a figure of around £1.00 per week.
