HC Deb 15 June 1998 vol 314 c104W
Mr. Reed

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what plans she has to introduce additional consumer protection measures in respect of imported genetically modified food. [44978]

Mr. Rooker

I have been asked to reply.

Stringent consumer protection measures are already in place: all genetically modified foods, whether imported or produced in the UK, have to undergo a rigorous safety assessment in accordance with the requirements of the EC Regulation on novel foods and novel food ingredients before they are allowed to be marketed. In addition, this and other EC regulations require all foods containing genetically modified material to be clearly labelled.
