HC Deb 11 June 1998 vol 313 cc685-6W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the estimated gross cost of anti-smoking campaigns in England aimed at children and young people has been since 1988; and what assessment he has made of the impact of the campaigns on teenage(a) boys and (b) girls.[44018]

Ms Jowell

The gross cost of anti-smoking campaigns in England aimed at children and young people, each year since 1988 is currently being looked into and I shall write to my hon. Friend with further information, as soon as it is available.

However, all of the Government's anti-smoking campaigns are continually evaluated. The Health Education Authority make qualitative and quantitative assessments of the campaigns and the Office for National Statistics track the impact of the campaigns by monitoring national prevalence figures.

The assessments of previous campaigns will be considered as preparations continue for the forthcoming Tobacco Control White Paper.
